Poser for Professional Advertising and Marketing

 May 12, 2008

I personally do not believe Smith Micro's Poser 3D human figure software gets the attention and respect it deserves from professional artists and designers. This goes double for advertising agencies.

By far Poser is the easiest and most cost effective 3D application for creating and using life-like human figures and clothing. The few other applications or plug-ins on the market are expensive and overly complicated to use. Poser is quite user friendly and doesn't take years to learn. There is a very active community that is willing to give a hand when issues arise and Smith Micro's support is top-notch.

I know first hand the power of Poser and the benefit it could have in the advertising and marketing industries. Several years ago we (Poser World 3D staff) were contacted by Turner Broadcasting's (TBS Atlanta) advertising company to create Atlanta Braves baseball uniforms for use on billboards all across the state of Georgia.

I suppose a bit of a backgrounder is in order as to why we were contacted to create the 3D clothing for the Braves billboards. In addition to publishing Designer Today Magazine, my company also owns and operates Poser World which is one of the oldest independent Poser 3D content creation companies around. We've been creating 3D Poser content such as clothing, models, props, textures and even complete 3D scenes since the early 1991 and have been selling Poser content since 1994.

Below are several comps of the billboards that were created with the clothing that we made specifically for the TBS billboards.

Atlanta Braves 2

Atlanta Braves 3

Atlanta Braves 4

We have seen our 3D creations in broadcast media such as televisions advertisements, in motion picture films, book illustrations, print advertisements, movie and television storyboarding, US military usage and of course large format billboards. The list goes on and on. Poser users are only limited by their imagination.

Poser is probably one of the most powerful, affordable and most often overlooked applications for realistic human figure modeling and rendering tools on the market. In Poser you aren't limited to human figures either, it is perfect for animal, insect, fantasy, and sci-fi. You name it and it can be accomplished in Poser.

Fashion Art and Advertising

I am surprised not to see more Poser 3D usage in the fashion industry. It is a very cost effective to display new fashions online that will save money on production photo sessions.

Print Advertising

While we (Poser World) haven't produced a lot of content specifically for print advertising agencies, However, Poser is being used more and more in print and motion advertising. Again Poser is a very cost effective for advertisers to get exactly what they want as it is created virtually.

Football - Soccer

As you can see Poser has many uses beyond traditional 3D art and animation. I see Poser gaining ground in the mainstream media as a way for agencies to cut costs while producing excellent work for their clients.

If you are looking for cost effective 3D human figures, clothing and accessories Poser is by far the best solution.

I think the main problem is the current and long-standing fashionable aversion to any form of illustration among advertising producers. They know (or think they know) that it just doesn't "grab" an audience like photography does. And if the client is paying, and it's a choice of getting some hands-on art-directing with a human model - or sitting in a sweaty cubicle with Kevin the CG-modelling guy for six hours, which are you going to choose?

And let's face, it most people don't know how to either stage-light or post-produce Poser renders - the football images above look especially ugly and plastic. I would suggest you produce better materials/render capabilities for Poser, to turn these sorts of images into something that looks much more like illustrations, that could then be used for comics, which have proven appeal in marketing materials for certain audiences.
